Understanding Burn Rates
A burn rate measures how fast you consume error budget relative to the sustainable rate.
The standard 14.4x burn rate is designed to alert when 2% of your budget is consumed in 1 hour.
Formula: burn_rate = (budget% / 100) * (window_days * 24 / alert_hours)
For a 30-day window, to consume 2% budget in 1 hour: (0.02) * (30 * 24 / 1) = 14.4

For reliable detection, you need enough events that random variation won't mask real problems. We use the Poisson confidence interval heuristic: expect ≥10 errors at threshold for reliable detection (≥20 for stable alerting). See also: Google SRE Workbook on low-traffic alerting.
